Olympiacos vs Arsenal

Arsenal are set to return to European action on Thursday evening.

With the Gunners currently sitting 10th in the Premier League – a full eight points off 6th – winning this season’s Europa League looks the club’s best chance of securing European football for the 2021/22 campaign.

Arsenal have drawn Greek outfit Olympiacos in the Round of 16, with the first-leg set to take place at the Karaiskakis Stadium in just over 24 hours.

Mikel Arteta’s side will likely be viewed as favourites for the tie, but it is worth remembering that it was Olympiacos who ousted the north Londoners from the competition in the Round of 32 just last season.

Mikel Arteta on Emile Smith Rowe

So, Mikel Arteta will no doubt be keen to have as strong a squad as possible at his disposal when facing off with the Greek giants.

One player who Arteta would no doubt love to have back is Emile Smith Rowe.

The midfielder managed just 42 minutes vs Leicester two weekends ago, with Arteta having confirmed post-match that the youngster had picked up a muscle injury, which ruled him out of Arsenal’s meeting with Burnley on Saturday.

When speaking ahead of Olympiacos on Wednesday, though, Arteta claimed that ESR is close to returning and they will assess his availability for Thursday’s tie after training today:

“He is close to returning. He is going to have a full session today to see if he is going to be involved [against Olympiacos]. After training, we will know where we are with him.”
